Heather Liebswager

Hello,
I am Heather Liebswager, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), Certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Certified Yoga Teacher, and owner of Serendipity Therapy. I am happy that you stopped by.  Please feel free to click around this website and if you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out as I would be happy to assist you.

What is my therapist's therapeutic orientation?
I am a feminist narrative therapist. This means that I believe that therapy is meant to empower people rather than blame or pathologize. As humans, and as tiny humans especially, we have learned various roles and rules that make up "stories" we tell ourselves and others. These stories contain our abilities, self-esteem, and family roles, among other things, and how we attribute meaning to them. When we encounter challenging circumstances or trauma we develop internalized "parts" of ourselves that house the meaning of these stories.

What is healing like in therapy?
This narrative operates like a video of one's life gathering information about how one thinks, feels, and behaves which is useful in being able to navigate the complexity of the world. It's unhealthy when these narratives are negative, rigid, or there are misunderstandings and misinterpretations or circumstances like trauma. Creating a new narrative or "meaning making" helps to view the problem (or part of yourself) differently as an alternative story. This allows for openness to explore thoughts and feelings, allowing the client/you to externalize the problem outside yourself, and deconstruct it. Narrative therapy is effective as many studies have shown that the client shifts from an external to internal locus of control.

Why call the company Serendipity you may ask?
As the name of my psychotherapy practice suggests there are Serendipity Moments in life that can be pivotal even when not looking for or expecting them. A serendipitous moment is a surprise blessing! Sometimes they happen to you; sometimes you have to look for them. Either way it's sacred as it's a break from the daily reality of life and seems to indicate a greater meaning and purpose.
